Changing the name of your computer, in and of itself, should make no difference. The first thing I’d try is checking your sound settings. Go to “Start”
    Programs
    Accessories
    Entertainment
    Volume Control

Once you have Volume Control highlighted, right-click it and choose “Pin to Start Menu.” Once you push the Start button again, it will be there. Make sure you don’t have anything muted, or sound levels turned all the way down.

I can help you more past this point, but I’ll need to have the exact model number of your system.

Thankyou so much for your detailed answer. The volume icon is back on the bottom of my screen and I do have sound. I went to Accessories as you suggested and expanded it, but there is nothing there for volume control. But anyway, all is working fine now…FYi my model is Toshiba Satellite L3550-S7809. Thanks again, tina
