It depends how much you’re prepared to compromise. Dell’s XPS m1710 was a beefy machine when it came out in 2006, earning top scores at CNET and elsewhere. Two years in gaming is a long time, though, and notebooks lose pace faster than desktops due to their lower-power, lower-heat mobile graphics chips — even expensive “gaming” models. As it is, the m1710’s NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS video, with 256MB of video RAM, will run the latest games. But not very well.
